At the Gate of the Year: A Message to a Troubled Nation

A new year is dawning and, when the calendar changes from one year to the next, it is usually accompanied with nostalgia for that which is past and anticipation of what lies ahead. As we "step" into 2016, none of us know what the new year will bring. But God knows!

With a national election on the horizon, and the uncertainty of new leadership in our country, we wonder what the future holds politically, economically, socially and especially spiritually. As we look back on 2015, we close a chapter in our lives. And as we look forward, we begin a new one.

At this time of year, many take personal account of their well-being, both physically and spiritually. Whether it's a diet to lose weight or just a determination to eat more healthy, New Year's resolutions are often set to achieve health goals. The same should be true of spiritual goals. Commit to spending more time in the Word and in prayer. Those two things, along with worship and Christian fellowship, are guaranteed to direct 2016 in the right direction, whatever the worldly circumstances might be.

The only thing we KNOW for certain about 2016 is that we do NOT KNOW what the year will bring. But we are to "fear not," because we do KNOW the One who knows all things and holds the future in His hands.

A Message to a Troubled Nation

At another time, in another country, a nation feared the daily circumstances encompassing their daily lives. In December 1939, England was at war. With every air-raid siren that pierced the ears of the English people, fear increased and anxiety prevailed. The nation was greatly troubled and, with Christmas and the New Year fast approaching, uncertainty and fear reigned in the minds of England's citizens.
