"I can't believe it -- our son looked me straight in the eye and lied! After all the time we put into reading great books and training him to be obedient, responsible, and honest, his behavior is really disappointing." Why is this situation so common? And why are we shocked when it happens? The Bible tells us the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked (Jeremiah 17:9). Really, we should never be surprised when the true nature of our child's heart is revealed.
It goes back to the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were created without sin, but Adam rebelled against God. Since Adam is the head of the human race by God's decree, all of his descendants -- all of humankind -- have inherited the natural inclination to hate God and rebel against Him (Romans 8:7; James 4:4). If we forget this sobering reality, we can become complacent and content with outward obedience to the family "rules."
